What Makes a Bed Comfortable—and Which Mattress Is Right for You?

Sleep is an important time for your body. It is when you rest, recover and prepare for the day ahead. Memories are consolidated, tissues are repaired and muscles recover—all while you are sound asleep in bed.

Considering that we spend around one-third of our lives in bed, the place where we sleep deserves to be high on our health and wellbeing priority list.

A healthy bed should be made from safe, breathable materials—but it must also feel comfortable, supportive and enjoyable to sleep in. The right mattress is not simply the softest or firmest one. It is the mattress that provides the right balance of support and comfort for your individual body.

What creates a comfortable bed?

1. Healthy spinal alignment

Your body can relax more fully when your spine is supported in a comfortable, neutral position. If a mattress is too soft, your hips may sink too deeply. If it is too firm, it may not follow the natural contours of your body.

Your mattress firmness and pillow height work together to support the alignment of your spine, neck and head.

2. Gentle pressure relief

Your mattress should support your spine without creating uncomfortable pressure around sensitive areas such as your shoulders and hips.

Side sleepers often need more cushioning around these areas, while back and stomach sleepers may require firmer support. Your body weight, shape, health needs and personal preferences will also influence what feels right for you.

A suitable comfort layer or mattress topper can provide additional pressure relief without compromising the underlying support.

3. Breathability and temperature regulation

Feeling too hot or clammy can interrupt your sleep, even when your mattress feels supportive.

Breathable materials such as natural latex, wool and organic cotton help air and moisture move through the bed. This creates a naturally balanced sleep environment—warm and cosy in winter, yet cooler and more breathable in summer.

Which mattress is right for you?

The right mattress depends on several personal factors:

  • Your preferred sleeping position

  • Your body weight and shape

  • Any areas of pain or sensitivity

  • Whether you prefer a softer or firmer feel

  • The type of bed base you use

  • Whether you and your partner have different comfort needs

  • Your preferred pillow height and support

Natural latex is an excellent material for personalised comfort because it gently follows the body while remaining responsive and supportive. Different latex firmnesses and layers can be combined to create the balance that feels right for you.
