Why does it matter what your mattress is made from?
We spend around one-third of our lives in bed, with our faces and bodies close to our mattress for many hours each night. It makes sense to look beyond the colour, firmness and price—and ask what is actually inside.
At INNATURE, we believe a healthy bed should be comfortable, supportive, breathable and made with materials you can understand and trust.
What can make a bed less healthy?
Look at the label on a conventional mattress. You may see materials such as polyurethane foam, memory foam, polyester, synthetic fibres or products with names such as “flexi gel.”
These materials are not automatically proof that a mattress is unsafe. However, many are derived from petrochemicals and require multiple ingredients and manufacturing processes. Depending on the mattress, its construction may also include adhesives, colourants, stabilisers, surface treatments or flame-resistant barriers.
The label may identify the main materials without explaining every ingredient used to manufacture or assemble them.
Some foam mattresses can release volatile organic compounds, particularly when new. The type and amount of emissions vary considerably between products, and the presence of a VOC does not automatically mean that it is present at a harmful level. However, it is reasonable to care about indoor air quality and to ask what you are bringing into your bedroom.
For us, this is not about creating fear. It is about giving you a simpler, more transparent choice.
What is a healthy bed?
A healthy bed is not defined by one material alone. It should support your body properly, relieve pressure, breathe well and help you remain comfortable throughout the night.
It should also be made from carefully selected materials, with as few unnecessary synthetic components as possible.
A healthy bed should offer:
-
Comfortable support and healthy spinal alignment
-
Pressure relief around the hips and shoulders
-
Good airflow and moisture management
-
Natural temperature regulation
-
Durable materials that retain their performance
-
A clear and transparent construction
-
A comfortable environment for deep, restful sleep
Why do we choose natural materials?
Natural materials have been used to create comfortable sleeping environments for generations. They offer qualities that are difficult to reproduce with layers of synthetic foam and polyester.
Natural latex provides responsive support and gently follows the body without creating a deeply sinking feeling.
NZ wool helps manage heat and moisture, keeping your bed warm and cosy in winter while remaining breathable in summer.
Organic cotton and hemp fabrics feel comfortable against the body and allow air to circulate.
We also use TENCEL™ in selected products. TENCEL™ is a regenerated cellulose fibre made from wood rather than a raw natural fibre such as wool or cotton.
Together, these materials help us create beds that feel naturally comfortable, dry and fresh.
The INNATURE approach—no unnecessary nasties
Since 2007, we have handcrafted natural mattresses, bedding and solid timber bedroom furniture in our New Lynn factories.
Our organic latex mattresses are made using certified organic natural latex, NZ wool and organic fabrics. We do not use polyurethane foam, solvent-based glues, added chemical flame retardants or formaldehyde-based adhesives in our mattress assembly.
Instead of gluing the internal layers together, we carefully assemble and hand-stitch them to help prevent movement and displacement over time.
It takes more time to make a mattress this way, but it allows us to create a simpler, more durable product without compromising our principles.
Natural choices for different needs
INNATURE uses a thoughtfully selected range of natural and plant-derived materials:
-
Certified organic natural latex for mattress cores
-
Pure NZ wool
-
Organic cotton and hemp fabrics
-
Natural silk
-
Wood-derived TENCEL™ fibres
-
Solid natural timber
We also offer vegan options made without animal-derived materials such as wool or silk. Talk with us about your preferences, and we will explain which materials are used in each product.
Made for you in Auckland
Choosing natural does not mean compromising on comfort.
We begin by learning about your body, preferred sleeping position and comfort needs. We can then recommend the most suitable mattress design and firmness, or customise a mattress, futon or bed to your required dimensions.
Everything is handcrafted locally and sold directly to you. This allows us to maintain our quality standards, provide personal service and offer excellent long-term value.
Sleep naturally, with confidence
You do not need to understand a long list of chemical names to choose a better bed. You simply need clear information about what is inside, how it is made and whether it feels right for you.
At INNATURE, we create natural beds for people who value comfort, craftsmanship and greater transparency about the materials surrounding them every night.
Choose natural materials. Choose personal comfort. Choose a bed made for you.
